"Dieterich Buxtehude and the Stylus Phantasticus"
Organist and composer Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was organist of the Marienkirche in Lübeck from 1668 and a prominent influence on the compositional style of J.S. Bach. Buxtehude's free, virtuosic writing explores the wide-ranging possibilities of the North German organ. Today's performance will feature two of Buxtehude's organ works: a lyrical prelude on the Pentecost chorale "Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott," followed by his exuberant Toccata in D minor.
